Peeking into the Hidden ML Layer of the OS - Thu, Jul 27, 2023
A glimpse into the discreet ML Layer of the Operating System that I talked about in 2018
Operating Systems (OSes) have always fascinated me because they’re special, no matter what they are. The way we connect with our OS through our devices every day is truly unique.
During my keynote at the San Francisco Bay ACM in 2018, I mentioned the idea of having an ML Layer in the OS. At that time, the implementation was too new and buggy to display, but I believed in it. This idea later led me to delve deeper into the basics of the system and helped me tackle what I call the Round Focus/Paradox Theory.
Five years have passed since then, and now it’s time to share a bit of that implementation. These days, even though we have 60Hz screens, not everything runs at 60fps. But this OS runs at a smooth 60fps all the time.
When a user starts using this system, they receive voice messages or notes from the OS. This method of communicating with the user is different from a regular conversation. I’ll talk more about this later. What’s really interesting is that the ML Layer quietly working under the hood. This, among other things, tackles some problems that people often blame on social media.
Reflecting on the journey thus far is both rewarding and encouraging, fostering anticipation for the road ahead.
